The International Code Council responded to Abu Dhabi and licensed content for use in the development and publication of Abu Dhabi building codes. We continue to provide training, consulting, and other support services to the Middle East and North Africa Region (MENA Region) through our Dubai office.

The International Code Council worked with CARICOM/CROSQ on the development and implementation of the Caribbean Regional Energy Efficiency Building Code that has either been adopted or is in consideration for a number of countries in the region. Also, after consultations with regional authorities and experts, the Code Council developed specific training and certifications for the region to help ensure effective implementation of the code.  Other efforts in the region include licensing content for the building, plumbing and/or accessibility codes in Puerto Rico, Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago and completing a training needs assessment in Jamaica.

The Code Council actively worked with the Pakistan Engineering Council (PEC) in the development of the Pakistan Building Code and is currently participating in the development of the Pakistan Green Building Code.

Projects in Bangladesh include consulting on major national initiatives funded by the World Bank, including Building Code Implementation and Enforcement Strategy for Urban Resilience and Professional Registration Program for Structural Engineers.

Similar to how the Code Council supports a number of other countries in developing a framework for building safety, the Code Council licenses content from the International Building Code to Ghana.

Funded by the government of Italy, Code Council projects in the Republic of Marshall Islands (RMI) included development of the RMI national building code based on the International Codes (I-Codes), review and proposed changes to the RMI Zoning Act, digitization of the RMI Building Code and consulting on online/digital building permit process.

The Code Council led the development of a new step-by-step protocol for energy code remote virtual inspections for low-rise residential buildings, which focused on the 2018 and 2021 editions of the International Energy Conservation Code (IECC) . The Code Council, working with PNNL and stakeholders, developed the protocol for DOE that will enable building officials to verify compliance with the residential provisions of the IECC without being physically present at the construction site.

In another effort, the DOE announced a $1.1 million grant for a three-year energy efficiency study on building industry standard practices. The University of Central Florida's Florida Solar Energy Center, in partnership with the Code Council and the Residential Energy Services Network (RESNET), will lead the study.

Code Council consulting projects include periodically updating critical structural and seismic engineering Unified Facility Criteria (UFC) documents that the DOD and its contractors design and construct structures to.  This relationship stretches back more than a decade. New contracts periodically update the structural and seismic UFC documents to the latest I-Code provisions to ensure that the highest levels of safety are upheld.

The Code Council actively works closely with 19 states and 10 local jurisdictions to develop customer versions of its I-Codes that are better tailored to those jurisdictions’ specific needs. Notable Code Council initiatives resulting in custom codes include California, New York State and New York City.

The Code Council Family of Solutions also offers consulting services that assist jurisdictions with codification of their municipal codes, as well as providing digitization services that allow authorities to better serve their communities through utilization of the latest digital technologies and platforms.

The Code Council has worked closely with RESNET in the co-development of several energy and water efficiency standards.  The ICC has also worked to elevate training opportunities available for the energy evaluation and compliance sectors.

The Code Council offers its expertise and consulting services to a number of national and regional organizations, such as the National Institute of Building Sciences, to conduct research into various aspects of the building safety industry.  Past research projects between ICC and NIBS include evaluation of the effects of the exodus of building officials from the workforce as they retire and a study on how building codes help mitigate the effects from natural hazards.

The Code Council also supports both small and large organizations and Code Council Chapters in developing websites and organizing and managing large annual meetings and training events, including notable industry favorites such as EDUCODE and Region III.
